Patriot or Disgrace?


On May 19, 1776 Major Isaac Butterfield of Westmoreland assembled 390 men under his command at the fort on the St. Lawrence River in Canada called Cedars and surrendered them to British Captain George Forster. For this, the first surrender of American patriots to the British in the American Revolution he was branded a scoundrel and deserved an infamous death according to Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. This is the story of his life and the very earliest history of this town that he returned to and became one of its leading citizens.

The 1858, 1877 and 1892 maps of Cheshire County showing locations of dwellings in the town of Westmoreland with the owners' names in those years, plus records from the Registrar of Deeds Office at the Cheshire County Courthouse in Keene, these were so painstakingly researched by Anita Aldrich of Walpole, Marjorie Aldrich Hudson of Westmoreland and Bill Howland of Keene, are the sources of the background material of early Westmoreland houses still standing.

This book contains pictures and a written narrative of the history of each home including the original builder and inhabitants from the late 1700's to present.
